Crown chakra

This is the final of the main chakras. It is number 7, the number of perfection. It is located at the top of the head.

Seven is often seen as the number of the divine and that is the case with this chakra, it is our connection to the heavens, where the divine flows into our earthly being. It is the coordination center of the energy system.

Its Sanskrit name, Sahasrara speaks of purity and infinity.

Its color is violet which symbolizes spiritual mastery. It is the highest and most subtle of the light spectrum. It is a combination of both red and blue and this is key to understanding this color. It brings the stability and warmth of red and the practicality and coolness of blue, thus bring out the best of both.

Purple or violet is said to be an aid to meditation and is a calming color. For those using the blue and indigo in the psychic field will find the red in violet has a grounding effect.

The organs associated with this area are the pineal gland, the brain, the skeletal system, the skin and the nervous system. It can also be responsible for depression, migraine headaches, paralysis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, frustration, manic-depression and psychoses.

When it is unbalanced you may experience lack of inspiration, confusion, crisis of faith, not wanting to help others and senility.

Spiritually it affects faith, trust in life, ethics, courage, devotion and humanitarianism.

To balance this chakra you need to have balanced the other energy centres and then to work with this one.

The main way of balancing this energy is to use meditation. Meditate on an image of distant mountain tops, whilst holding a violet colored gemstones such as amethyst, charoite or lepidolite. If you use the essential oil lavender this will also help to balance this area. When using essential oils, place one or two drops in water on top of an oil burner sold specifically for this purpose. Never leave the candle burning in the burner unattended.

As this energy center opens and balances you will begin to feel your devine purpose in life. You will discover a peace and contentment you may not have felt up till now. This chakra is where our higher self or our God self and as we connect fully with this we will rise above many of the earthly concerns and begin to see the bigger picture.

There are chakras eight through ten that are being explored and opened, so as we achieve balance in the first seven we may then find new levels of receptivity open up in us as we begin to explore more and more of the spiritual planes. However a note of caution here. It is imperative that you maintain a strong grounding and balance of your base chakra to keep you firmly in the earth plane.

I encourage you to practice meditation and even look at taking up yoga as this has proved very successful in keeping all of our chakras open and balanced.

Third eye chakra

The third eye chakra is number six and is situated in the middle of the forehead, between the brows and so sometimes it is also known as the brow chakra.

It's color is Indigo blue, a deep blue. While blue is the color of communication with others, indigo turns the blue inward, to increase personal thought, give profound insights and instant understandings. Indigo symbolizes heavenly grace. Too much indigo and we feel we are above others too little and we live in a world of fantasy.

Its Sanskrit name, Ajna means both "the perception center" and "the command center." One definition of perception is intuitive recognition or appreciation and this sums up this energy center. It is recognition and perception, but it has an intuitive element to it. This is the inner and outer worlds connecting.

This energy center is the center of our spiritual seeing. This chakra sees beyond the physical in the form of clairvoyance, telepathy, intuition, dreaming, imagination, and visualization as well as where we get wisdom, separating fantasy from reality, creation of art and the seeing of auras.

It is associated with sight, thinking, perception, wisdom, the brain, the nervous system, the eyes, the ears, the nose, the pineal gland, the pituitary gland. When it is unbalanced we can experience brain tumors, deafness, stroke, seizures, learning difficulties, headaches, schizophrenia, panic attacks, depression and detachment.

If you suffer from depression beware of having too much indigo as it can take you deeper into the depression, so instead concentrate on the heart and the throat chakra and this will automatically start to open and balance this one.

Stones to help this energy center are Lapis, Blue Jasper and blue sodalites.

Nature images to use to open and balance this chakra are the night sky just after sunset before it goes to full black.

To clear this chakra, we need to maintain the innocence of a child by getting away from the cynical approach of seeing what we expect to see, and start to see and experience everything as if it were for the first time. Try not to use the word "is". For example 'Indigo is the color of this chakra' instead say 'indigo appears to be the color of this chakra.'

The best way to keep the third eye open is to make sure that you have enough energy going through it from the chakra directly beneath it. Take time to gaze at the early night sky and do deep breathing exercises.

Throat chakra

The Throat Chakra is number 5, the first of the higher ones. It is situated in the middle of our throat and is aqua blue in color. Blue is calming and relaxing, steadfast and friendly.

This energy center is our communication center. It is also thought to be the messenger of the spirit. It is where we either speak out our truth or swallow what we really feel. How honestly do we express ourselves?

The organs and parts of the body associated with this area are the throat, vocal chords, esophagus, thyroid, trachea, neck vertebrae, mouth, teeth, gums and hyperthalemus. If you suffer neck stiffness, shoulder tension, teeth grinding, jaw disorders, throat ailments, thyroid problems, a fear of speaking or excessive talking, an inability to listen, hearing difficulties or stuttering it means this center is out of balance. It covers both sounds and the more subtle vibrations.

The rhythm of music, the creativity of dance, the vibration of singing and the communication we make through writing and speaking, be that poetry, stories or the writing of songs, all of these reside in the fifth chakra.

Emotionally it is where we are able to express what we feel verbally as well as telepathy and creativity of expression.

Spiritually it is whether we are able to speak up for what we believe in. White lies, half truths and falsehoods pollute this energy center. Repressing anger or displeasure, even being silent when we are unhappy, all these things affect this chakra.

Part of balancing this area is to learn to speak your truth, to speak with honestly, but we can do this in a non threatening way by owning our feelings and expressing ourselves with "I" statements. For example, "I feel sad when you do..." Rather than "you make me feel sad..."

This chakra actually has three separate aspects to it. The first is our speaking and listening abilities including our creativity and our connection to others. The second part is where we connect with others telepathically, sending thoughts and feelings, like when we realize we are on the same wavelength as someone else. We instinctively seemed tuned into them. The third part is our own inner voice, listening to it and allowing it to speak. Allowing yourself to pick up your intuition and to receive direction from the Divine. Being able to listen to our inner voice and being able to determine if it is our inner parent, which is often critical, our inner child, which is often needy, or the healthier inner adult.

The Sanskrit name of Visuddha means "pure" or "purification." This means that for this area to be open and balanced we need to practice truthfulness, we need to speak things that are pure be it poetry, scripture reading, songs we sing or the words we speak. Also drinking more water and stopping smoking helps in this area. We need to keep it pure. We need to express our needs and be able to set boundaries and say 'No' when necessary.

Stones that help this area are Kyanite which acts as a shield as well as balancing this area, Lapis and Chrysocola.

A great nature image for this is a calm ocean with a clear blue sky. Either sit by the sea or look at an image of it. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply and relax. Imagine you are stretching your neck up to look at the clear blue sky, as you lift your head your throat expands and the suns rays warm the area. Imagine you are having a drink of cool, clear water and then a small glow starts in your throat and gets larger and larger, spinning anticlockwise in women and clockwise in men. As it spins it is flicking off flecks of white light. This Chakra is open and balanced, you can sing or express yourself freely, you can set your boundaries and you are listened to with respect.

A good affirmation for this area is, " I listen and I am heard. I speak my truth and I am calm. I am creative and expressive."

Heart chakra

The heart chakra is number four. It is the center of the commonly recognized energy centers. It is the balance point between the three lower or earthly chakras and the three upper or spiritual ones. It is thought to be where our spirit resides.

Its sanskrit name, Ananhata, means unhurt or unstuck and this is the way it should be when it is open and balanced.

People are now beginning to realize that the heart has a memory just like the brain, so it is important for us to have this energy center open, balanced and fully functional.

This area is all about love and giving. Both self love and love for others. It is where compassion, joy, happiness, honesty, respect, understanding, generosity and tolerance sit. It is our center of forgiveness, both of ourselves and others. Where there is love there is also peace. This is an area of the human body as a whole that needs to be opened, not just our individual body.

It's physical location is in the upper chest (the heart region) and upper back. All chakras form a vortex going both towards the front of the body and the back of the body. The physical areas it influences are the heart, the circulation, the arms, blood, lungs, rib cage, diaphragm, thymus, breasts, esophagus, shoulders and hands.

Its color is green, like the green of the sea on a clear day and it has a center of pink, representing peace and love. This is the center of Chi (positive energy) in our body. Green symbolizes harmony, creativity, health, abundance and nature. It also symbolizes new energy and revitalizes tired nerves. Pink is the color of the peaceful, quiet side of love. Universal love, acceptance, caring, friendship, affection, contentment and relaxation.

If this area is blocked you may notice you experience hatred, guilt, paranoia, self pity and selfishness, you may have powerful feelings for others but they will be conditional upon what they do for you. You may be self centered, impatient or unsympathetic. This usually comes about because you are afraid to love others and cannot love yourself.

Nature images that help with this area are any nature scene especially those with a predominance of green or a beautiful flower garden with lots of pink flowers. The stones associated with it are Green Jade, Kunzite, Rose Quartz, and Pink tourmaline. Therefore if you can hold one of these stones and either look at an image of nature or sit in nature as you meditate to open and clear this chakra you will be bringing lots of energy into this area to open and balance it.

Sit comfortably, close your eyes, breathe deeply a few times and then imagine yourself floating in a sea of crystal clear green water, it is warm like a bath and you float effortlessly, you have on goggles and a snorkel so you can float yet see what is around you and breathe easily. You are coming up to a beautiful bed of pink coral, it is like an underwater garden. You are able to totally let go of all your cares and worries. The water is gently washing away all your past hurts and you feel a new lightness. You are letting go of fear and love is washing through you. Total unconditional love filling every part of your being. You float towards the shore and as you climb out of the water you realize you are washed clean both inside and out and the pink coral you saw has imprinted itself upon your heart. You are not only able to give love, but you are now able to receive love fully.

Affirmations to use to remind yourself of this new reality are, "I am forgiving, accepting, tolerant and compassionate. I am affectionate, loving and warm hearted. I am at peace."

It is important to protect this chakra so that you don't become too open or too empathetic, so ask for the white light of love to protect you and put a special bubble of devine love around this area.

Solar plexis chakra

This is also known as the third major energy center. It is located where our ribs join and the solar plexus are. It is bright yellow in color, like a bright shining sun in the middle of our being.

Yellow is the color of the sun, it is one of the colors that almost everyone can see. It speaks of creativity and intelligent thinking, wisdom, joy and happiness. Like a bright sunny day, it can be uplifting, cheery, fun, happy, vibrant. Bringing optimism and enlightenment.

This energy center is the center of self esteem, personal power, ego and gut instinct. It is the center of the power of transformation.

It supports the spleen, pancreas, stomach, liver, upper abdomen, umbilicus to rib cage, liver, gallbladder, middle spine, kidney, adrenals, small intestines and metabolism. As it is associated with the stomach and intestines when it is unbalanced it can lead to stomach ulcers, intestinal tumors, diabetes, pancreatitis, indigestion, anorexia/bulimia, hepatitis, cirrhosis, adrenal imbalances, arthritis, colon diseases, gallbladder problems, excessive weight around your middle and loss of appetite.

It is associated with the functioning of the etheric and astral plane so spiritually, you can fail to live your own truth and to be who you are really meant to be if it is blocked.

Emotionally you may experience fear, hate, anxiety and panic. You may have low self esteem, fear of rejection, oversensitivity to criticism, self-image fears, fears of our secrets being found out, indecisiveness, you may be manipulative or competitive if it is unbalanced or blocked

Part of balancing this chakra is to set limits and learn to ask for what you need. Also give yourself a big hug every day. You will develop the power to create and accomplish, rather than the power over something or someone.

Natural images to help balance this energy vortex are sunlight and sunflowers. Any yellow gemstones will also help, a couple are citrine and amber.

As you either sit out in the sun or immerse yourself in an image of nature, take a couple of deep breaths and relax your muscles, relax into the warmth of the sun. Imagine the suns energy flowing into you and forming a huge ball of yellow light, this light holds your inner strength and you intuition. This ball of energy will turn anticlockwise for a woman and clockwise for a man. Imagine it rotating and being a bright clear yellow, allow the fire of the sun to burn away any blockages and use the affirmation, "I am empowered, confident and flexible, I am focused, productive and successful."

Often just recognizing that this is the center responsible for these areas, we can see the changes we need to make to be healthier and happier. Don't beat yourself up, instead imagine yourself calm and accepting. If negative thoughts intrude, acknowledge them and then let them go and replace them with more positive self affirming ones.

Sacral chakra

This Chakra is the second chakra and is located below the belly button in the lower abdomen, and its color is orange.

The color orange is associated with vitality, endurance, creativity, enthusiasm and joy. It symbolizes energy, warmth, and the sun. But orange is a little less intensity or aggression than red as it is softened by the inclusion of yellow.

Organs associated with this are the uterus, ovaries, testes, large bowel, prostate and circulation. If you suffer from pre-menstural tension, ovarian cysts, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, low back pain, pancreatic or testicular diseases then this is the chakra you need to work on.

It also represents the aspect of self-acceptance, allowing ourselves to be who we really are, self-respect and from this flows respect for others. Self acceptance is accepting and loving ourselves as we are now. We may have things we want to change but while they are part of us we need to learn to love and accept them. It is only as we learn to totally accept ourselves that we are then able to accept others.

This is our relationship center and determines how well we are able to equally give and receive. It is the center of our passion for life.

This center is also responsible for duality. When opposites within us and our emotions balance each other, the relationship is healthy, and we are but, when there are extremes of either polarity then problems can occur. In it's extreme this is Bipolar disorder. It is also when this center is unbalanced that our thoughts and feelings can lead to depression, additions and anorexia or bulimia.

The Sanskrit name for this one is Svadisthana, which translates as "sacred home of the self." I love this as we so often forget that we are sacred and we need to honor ourselves and this is the center where we do this.

In females this rotates clockwise and for men, anticlockwise.

This energy center is about going with the flow, accepting things as they are, just being and being in the moment.

The color of this chakra speaks to me of sunrise and sunset. Most people when they stop to observe these, let go of everything and are just 'in the moment'. It also speaks of hope, hope for what the new day will bring or the hope of tomorrow.

This energy vortex is where our poetic skills come from.

The gemstone for this chakra is Amber so if you hold it or where it while you meditate will help you. To balance this chakra you need to focus on an orange image or a sunrise or sunset. An affirmation to use might be, "I am creative, balanced and living in the moment. I have healthy loving relationships and I am comfortable with my sexuality."

Then put your focus on your abdomen, to the area of the "womb." (Or where the womb would be if you're a man). Take a moment to observe the chakra. Look at its color, its vitality. Is it clear, is the color strong? The angel associated with this area is the Archangel Gabriel, she embodies purity, so allow her invisible hands to place any murkiness or discolor in the area into a bucket, she will cleanse and clear your emotions of negativity and the harmful addictions, you can let go of relationships that have made you feel dirty. She will release you from your cravings for unhealthy food and you will find your thoughts and attachment to unhealthy food or excessive eating are dissolved and then when she is done send the pail towards the light of the sun to be cleansed. It is now clean and whole, and a bright orange. Draw orange creative energy to the space within and around you and begin to feel an orange glow. Feel the energy begin to swirl into your chakra, charging it with vitality, clear-thought, acceptance and hope. Watch as it grows and swirls, until it extends out from your body for several feet.

Root chakra

The base or root energy center is often referred to as the first one.

This energy vortex is what needs to be open and clear for us to be firmly grounded and yet it is one we often have trouble with.

It is where the energy is stored that connects us to the earth, that affects our hips, our legs and our spinal column. It is our sexual center, it is responsible for the health of the bladder, kidneys and adrenal glands.

Emotionally it is the center of self-awareness. How you see yourself and how you fit in this world. Ask yourself, do I have past memories or relationships that I need to heal? Am I allowing my past to control how I react to people and situations? What do I need to forgive?

If your adrenals are not functioning properly you often suffer from fatigue even after normally adequate sleep, feeling depressed, insomnia, cravings for sweet food and/or cravings for salt and extreme sensitivity to cold. If you are having problems in these areas it is often because this chakra is not opened and balanced properly.

It is located at the base of our spine, its color is red.

Red symbolizes life, growth and the burning away of negativity and weakness. Red is the color of earth. Red regenerates increases the will to live.

This chakra spins anticlockwise in female and clockwise in men. If this energy is balanced you will be positive and assertive, but if it is unbalanced you may be insecure, aggressive or self-pitying.

To energize this energy center we can use meditation, often it helps to have a red image or a red crystal, such as jasper or ruby, to meditate on. As you meditate visualize energy being pulled up from the earth through your feet up your legs into your base chakra, then up your spine and spreading throughout your body. Next picture a beam of healing energy flowing down the crown your head and through your body. When you feel the calm flow of energy imagine it forming a beautiful ball of red energy spinning anticlockwise if you're a woman or clockwise if you are a man.

A good affirmation for this energy center is, "I am strong and secure, I am healthy and balanced, all my needs are met and I am loved unconditionally."

If you like to use essential oils, cedarwood and patchouli and good oils to help you connect to the earth and become balanced.

A great way to balance these areas of your life are to spend time in nature, walking barefoot in the sand, hugging a tree, swimming in the ocean. Anywhere where you can directly connect to the earth. It is a good idea to sit outside on the grass as you do the meditation and say the affirmation. As you do this you will feel the stress draining out of you and the earths energizing life force flowing up into you.
